Named after the many oak trees growing in the area, Thousand Oaks is a city located 35 miles from Downtown Los Angeles. It’s also the second-largest city in Ventura County. Thousand Oaks is approximately 20 percent larger than San Francisco at 55 square miles, with a population estimated at around 130,000. Thousands of years before Europeans arrived in the area of modern-day Thousand Oaks, the Chumash Native Americans lived here and established two significant villages where Wildwood Regional Park is located today. In 1542, Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo, a renowned maritime navigator, and an explorer working for the Spanish Empire landed at Point Mugu. In 1822, Spain lost ownership of California as a consequence of the Mexican War of Independence. In 1846, the California Republic was established and, in 1850, California officially became a state. During the beginning of the 20th century, the Janss family purchased 10,000 acres and started drawing up plans for a master-planned community. It wasn’t until the 1950s that Thousand Oaks began to experience serious population growth. Until that time, the area remained dedicated to agriculture and ranching. The arrival of many high-tech companies such as Packard Bell and Technology Instrument Company supported further growth. Thousand Oaks was officially incorporated on October 7, 1964.
